CAD/CAM systems are indispensable tools for automating CNC programming. With the rapid advancement and widespread application of CAD/CAM technology, the market now offers a variety of CAD/CAM software solutions. In China, over ten mature CAD/CAM products are commonly used, most of which are developed by foreign companies, while domestic software is relatively scarce. Differences in functionality, application scope, and price create diverse options for users. Below are introductions to several widely used CAD/CAM software systems:

1. MDT (Mechanical Desktop) System

MDT, developed by Autodesk in 1996, is a fully parametric CAD software integrating 2D drafting and 3D modeling, designed to run on Windows 95 and Windows NT. By integrating CAM systems like the UK-based EdgeCAM, MDT combines robust modeling features with specialized CAM functionalities. Its similarity to AutoCAD, the most popular CAD software in China, has contributed to MDT's rapid adoption. MDT's parametric design closely aligns with human design processes, while EdgeCAM offers advanced machining strategies, allowing diverse toolpath generation based on part features.

2. UG System

Initially developed by McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, the UG system has evolved over two decades into a comprehensive CAD/CAM solution, excelling in complex surface modeling and CNC machining. With strong capabilities in both surface and solid modeling, UG systems are flexible and user-friendly. The CAM module supports interactive programming and generates toolpath source files (CLSF), which can be edited, simulated, and processed into NC codes for CNC machining. UG is highly regarded for its advanced geometry modeling and robust secondary development environment.

3. CAXA-ME System

Developed by Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Haier Software (formerly Huazheng Mold Institute), CAXA-ME is a domestically produced, fully Chinese 3D CAD/CAM software tailored for mechanical manufacturing enterprises. It supports multi-CAD file compatibility and offers features such as 2-5 axis CNC programming, toolpath simulation, verification, and post-processing. Its affordability makes it a popular choice in the Chinese market.

4. CIMATRON System

CIMATRON, developed by Israel's Cimatron Ltd., was among the first systems to implement 3D CAD/CAM functionality on microcomputer platforms. It also supports various workstation versions, including SUN, SGI, DEC, HP, and IBM. CIMATRON features a user-friendly interface, excellent 3D modeling capabilities, and comprehensive CNC programming tools, making it a versatile solution for manufacturing industries.

5. MasterCAM System

Developed by CNC Software Inc., MasterCAM is a microcomputer-based CAD/CAM software renowned for its powerful NC capabilities. It supports 2-5 axis milling, turning, wire EDM, flame cutting, and laser cutting. Widely used in the mold-making industry, especially in China’s coastal regions, MasterCAM is recognized for its extensive machining applications and strong user base.
